Greetings All:

I am scheduled to again teach LIS 763 Readers Advisory Services for the fall 2017 semester with Dominican University's School of Information Studies (River Forest, Illinois). Those who have taken the class with me in the past or have read my various articles know that I see leisure reading and learning as inevitably intertwined. This can help, I hope, in a time of growing division and increasingly problematic lack of understanding--even on the community level. .

The connection of "pleasure" reading with the possibility of enhanced understanding is why I am posting to seek two guest presenters for my River Forest course. Those who have been following the news are aware of the national divide, the symptoms of which have been appearing in our libraries, particularly our public libraries. Reading, of course, does not guarantee understanding but it can open the door. Sometimes it really helps to have guest presenters who are dealing with RA services and are of possible issues on a recurring basis

To help with the process I am seeking volunteer presenters who are familiar with one of the following genres. The deadline for reply is August 12. (Classes begun on August 30 and I always redo the syllabus before printing and posting online.)

I. GLBTQQ--Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning. These are multiple genres but I ONLY HAVE about 14 class sessions and there are romances, mysteries, SF, historical, horror, etc. to address.

The presenter does not have to be knowledgeable about all subgenres of these genres since I can fill in any aspects later in the semester.

II. INSPIRATIONAL--Christian fiction, any other religious fiction, humanistic approaches, etc. Although I use "Inspirational" in my RA classes, I know that a number of libraries use a variant of "Christian" in response to local demand. Again, I can address any areas not covered by the presenter.

The classes are 6 p. m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, with two breaks. BTW, if a practitioner's presentation takes only part of the time I always have handouts and aspects to bring up. There is no financial compensation but I can provide a dinner at Dominican and all the water, soft drinks, coffee, or tea that a guest presenter requires.

Right now I am beginning to develop the syllabus so the following dates are available:

September
20
27

October
4,
11
18
25

November
1
8
22
29

December
6

Providing RA students with a knowledge of both the genres they love and the genres that are loved by others can only help in a divisive time. Any assistance will be most appreciated. Please send me an email if your are interested in helping with the effort.

Many thanks,
Bill
