The Shattered Sea trilogy by Joe Abercrombie is a great place to start. Abercrombie is always a lot of fun and this trilogy is an easy and entertaining read about the scheming and maneuvering of a handful of nations built on the ruins of their more advanced ancestors. As you get farther into the books, the author leaves clues as to who these ancients were and allows the plot to take an interesting turn.
