Re adult volunteers: We have a few things that was ask our volunteers to help with --- shelving, desk help (checking items for parts and condition, and moving things to put-a-way shelves/areas after check in by staff (this is a VERY popular job) pulling the items to fill holds, Homebound Delivery and then one time events such as major shelf shifting. We have an informal orientation program and training for the various tasks. We have about 30 volunteers all together, including one who runs the Homebound program --- A staff member takes care of all the rest of it.

Hope this helps?

Hello Everybody,

I am requesting your assistance: Have any of you created a display of the
Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction (
www.ala.org/carnegieadult) winners, shortlists, selected from longlist,
etc. (can be for any year)?

Have you had book groups or discussions? Author talks? Other notable
programs or services related to the awards?

We’d love to see photos of your display if you have any – or just let us
know if you've done anything, and the patron response.

You can reply directly to me at [log in to unmask] Thanks so much in advance!

Subject: Re: adult volunteers in the library

Adult volunteers shelve 90% of our collection (10% by teen volunteers). We do not have a paid staff page.

Circulation Desk – Adult Volunteers – must be HS graduate or have GED. They work 4 hour blocks once or twice weekly on a routine schedule (same days/times). We have some volunteers that have been doing this for 12 years.

Children’s/Reference Desk – same schedule type as Circulation. They must have a Bachelor’s degree. Often times retired teachers like to do this.

These volunteers get the same training as staff. On circulation, many of our volunteers have transitioned into regular staff positions.

Most of the volunteers we have, someone on the staff knows them really well or they have been using the library for years and we verbally recruit them.

Have never had a problem with our volunteers concerning confidentiality/money issues. They do not receive the code to the safe. Like I stated before, they are trained just like our staff is trained.

Hope this helps!

Kevin:

I am sorry but the Fiction_L 'Password setup instructions' in the email
below are confusing.

   - To what address exactly is *PW ADD **mypassword* supposed to be sent?
And is *PW ADD **mypassword* supposed to be the subject line of the
email or included as the text of the posting?

   - Also, why w/should the email require the sender to enter their
(supposedly private) *6 character alphanumeric* password in an
email that anyone might open and see?

   - Is there no other, more secure means to 'join/establish a password' (via
website address, for example) that allows the user to choose and enter a
   password privately?

What am I missing here?

Thanks.

Kevin -

I would also like to know why a password has to be broadcast to the
entire list? What is the purpose?

Thanks!

It's not clear to me if one needs to set up a password if one does not
especially want to tweek anything -- e.g., if (say) I am likely to
post only in response to someone else's existing post. So I guess
sending this off and seeing if it shows up will answer my question.

And it looks as though it did.

I do feel a bit of sadness for the loss of the clean, text-only former
version of the list, with none of this html and strange fonts
weirdnesses, but I guess I'll take my mind off it by going out front
and yelling at some kids to get off my lawn. (Then I'll come back in
and play some big band music on my cassette player.)

Subject: Password clarification

Hello everyone,,
I'm sorry about the confusion caused by my email on how to setup your password.
Here's a simplified version

Postings for Fiction_L are sent to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Commands are sent to the servers address [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> (the list never sees these messages)

For the password setup command the email would look like this

[cid:image001.png@01D1C75B.295FCA70]

You'll get a response like this:

Subject: Command confirmation request (2640171C) -> each response will have a different number

Your command:

                             PW ADD ********

requires confirmation. To confirm the execution of your command, simply click on the following link:

    http://listserver.cuyahogalibrary.net/scripts/wa.exe?OK=2640171C

Alternatively, if you have no WWW access, you can reply to this message and type OK as the text of your message. If you receive an error message, try sending a new message to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

(without using the "reply" function) and type OK 2640171C as the text of your message.

Your command will be cancelled automatically if LISTSERV does not receive your confirmation within 48h. After that time, you must start over and resend the command to get a new confirmation code. If you change your mind and decide that you do not want to confirm the command, then simply discard this message and let the request expire on its own.

Clicking on the link isn't working , so send a new message back like so (I have a call into support about this)

[cid:image002.png@01D1C75C.148C9050]

You'll get a reply:
Subject: Re: OK 2640171C

> OK 2640171C

Confirming:

> PW ADD ********

Your new password was registered successfully.

When I imported all the subscribers into the list it doesn't create a password for the accounts. This causes problems if you want to log into the web interface since you don't have a password and you can't change it because it will ask for your old password. That's why I wanted to instruct you on how to create your own password early on.

Thanks for your questions and comments
Kevin

Kevin -

I'm going to try to phone you either on Thursday or Friday. I'm
afraid I'm very confused. I sent you an email through the gmail
account I always used for Fiction_L. I got an error message and an
extremely long email back in my AOL account. I was also instructed to
send a msg. that said Confirm L. Which I did from that AOL account.
Which then came back with another error msg.

I would like to talk to you before I try to figure out "commands," etc.

Looking forward to speaking with you.

> Your command will be cancelled automatically if LISTSERV does not receive your confirmation within 48h. After that time, you must start over and resend the command to get a new confirmation code. If you change your mind and decide that you do not want to confirm the command, then simply discard this message and let the request expire on its own.
