My introduction to graphic novels (also for an RA class) was Batman: Year
One by Frank Miller. The art is cool, and it's easy enough to follow. You
could also try Miller's 300, which is beautiful and much better than the
movie!
Neil Gaiman's Sandman books are really great, lots of literary allusions,
probably my favorite.
If you like dark humor, you could try Chew by John Layman and Rob
Guillory.
Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan is also a solid choice.

Hi! I am in the process of getting my MLIS from SJSU, and am currently
taking a Reader's Advisory course. I am trying to explore more unfamiliar
genres, and one that I have no experience with is the graphic novel. I'm
looking for suggestions on where to start. Which would you recommend to a
brand new reader of graphic novels for adults or YA?
Thanks for any suggestions you might send my way!
