For a recent Western dealing with settlers, Crossing Purgatory by Gary  
Schanbacher not only tells the story of a man making his way West to  
escape his past, but of the culture clash between Anglos going West  
and Mexicans coming North.

Into the Savage Country by Shannon Burke is much earlier than most  
traditional Westerns, going back to the fur trade of the 1820s, when  
St. Louis was the end of civilization. Here's a review I wrote some
