The Plague Tales by Ann Benson might fit. There are two interwoven
stories:

1) Modern-day (or a bit into the future) - A female protagonist who has
discovered a very old strain of the plague.
2) The 1300s: A Spanish male physician trying to save the English royal
family from the same strain.

I actually liked the "past" story better, but it was a fun read all
around. There are three books in the series, but the first one can stand
alone.
