This is a very general tip....

Most of my children's RA struggles have been with reading levels, until a 
wonderful children's librarian taught me the "five-finger rule" for 
children's books. 

Once you find a book that might work, have the child read one page of the 
book. For each word the child stumbles over, have him/her put up one 
finger. If you get to five fingers or more, the book is probably too hard 
for that child to read alone. (Reading together, or reading it to the 
child is still fair game, of course!)

This has been super helpful for me - decidedly not a children's librarian 
- and it's something simple that you can teach parents and caregivers for 
future reference.

Hi Everyone,
I am looking to gather some suggestions for doing RA with children, tweens 
or young
adults that I can pass along to my library graduate students. I am used to 
doing RA with 
adults, and while some of those RA techniques can be modified for younger 
ages, I am 
hoping that  those of you who work with the younger ages may have a few 
tried and true 
suggestions (general or genre specific)  that you would be willing to pass 
along.
