How Far to Bethlehem? By Norah Lofts, perhaps.

Subject: "Christmas Story" book...not Jean Shepard's
Hi, everyone,
Here's a seasonal request. A patron is looking for a book she read in 1979. She doesn't remember the author or the title, or even what the cover looked like. The book is a novelization of Jesus' birth and the events leading up to it. She particularly remembers what an excellent job the author did of providing backstories for all the characters involved.
A search of WorldCat, Amazon, Wikipedia, and even just Google didn't net anything she recognized. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks so much,
Janet
