I'll strongly second Todd's suggestion of TRUE GRIT, which for some
reason I had never read until a few months ago.  I loved it.

A couple ofmuch  older (and longer than usual) westerns that I have
fond memories of reading decades ago -- the former is something of a
classic; nobody but me seems to remember the second:

WARLOCK by Oakley Hall (1958)
