How about a dog that dies and immediately comes back to life?  This is
a middle grade title but the description from the author, that he
based it on several actual tales he collected while travelling in
Europe makes me think it might have wider appeal:

The aforementioned dog is the reason for the inquisitor, as the people
in the town have decided to venerate the dog as a saint.
