I'm fond of the "New York Detective" pair of 19th century mysteries by
William Marshall:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Leonard_Marshall#Tillman_and_Muldoon_series

" late-19th-century New York City, the latter featuring City Detective
Virgil Tillman – New York City's "first thinking detective" – and his
partner, patrolman Ned Muldoon of the Strong Arm Squad."

I've heard of but not read any Maisie Dobbs book yet.

There are currently 17 books in the series and I'm kinda hesitant to read it. Has anyone heard of it? Or any historical mysteries ... suspense or may be even horror suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
