Seconding True Grit. I read it for the podcast I co-host a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

For me, hands down the best western I've ever read is TRUE GRIT by
Charles Portis, and it has an incredibly strong (especially because so
young) female protagonist.  And I wouldn't call it "too violent,"
though of course there are some violentish bits.
