Another vote for TRUE GRIT for your purposes, here...also, a look at the
western novels of (Ms.) Lee Hoffman wouldn't be out of line, though some
feature more women protagonists than others do (she won the WWA Spur Award
for her first one).  Marcia Muller is another old favorite of mine,
primarily a mystery writer, but her collection of short fiction TIME OF THE
WOLVES (the title story shortlisted for a Spur as well) is also well worth
the look, as is the collected western fiction of Elmore Leonard, another
writer best-known for his crime fiction, but his short story "The Tonto
Woman" definitely stands out in my memory as among those western stories
with a very strong woman protagonist; THE COLLECTED WESTERN STORIES OF
ELMORE LEONARD is almost as easy to find as Portis's TRUE GRIT.
